Autumn Nail Colours

These are my 7 favourite nail polishes for autumn. Reds are always good - one very dark, one medium dark and one really red (hence the name). Then there is a grey - obviously because it will often blend in with the weather and my mood. Prepped with a little glitter or a second highlighter polish, any 'boring' colour will really become special. Then there are 2 purples - one medium, one light. Lastly a very light pink which is always a good idea and appropriate for pretty much any occasion.

Fancy Flowers

Look what I got the other day from sweet Joe. Although I am not a huge fan of flower bouquets (because I don't see the point of spending loads of money on flowers that will last 2 weeks tops if I could spend that on something which will last way longer) I thought this one looked particularly special. And he said he got it basically free so I wasn't too upset about him wasting money on it. Isn't it lovely when someone brings home gifts just because they love you ...

Cute Chestnut DIYs

One of me friends from when we were still little, Hannah, made these really sweet chestnut men last year and I couldn't help but share them with you now. Just go picking all of the autumn harvest from the local streets and stick some matches into them to make these cute DIYs, decorating your own window sills and tables. If you want to follow Hannah on Pinterest to see what else she likes and does, simply click here.

Guest Posts Wanted!

Hello lovelies, I need your help! I am a bit overwhelmed with work and going from LOADS of spare time to LITTLE spare time and I currently find myself struggling to prepare a post every day. Weekends are already officially considered time off now and I usually just create a post at work or in the little non-tired time I have at night but I would love to be able to keep this blog running and I probably just need a little time to catch up and get things sorted out. This is where you come in. Please help me and email me with guest post ideas. I would super appreciate that! I am very open to almost all kinds of topics (life, love, baking, nails, DIY, fashion, shopping, advice, and so on), however, I will obviously review your posts beforehand and reserve myself the right to decline any posts but I am sure you are all sweet girls with lots of lovely ideas so DON'T BE SHY!! Big kiss, May.

Glitz and Glamour at the Emmys

Kristen Wiig and here fairy dress - Tina Fey in the most beautiful colour - Claire Danes in the prettiest of all the yellow dresses
Don't we all love a gown now and then? To be honest, I've only ever worn one once and it wasn't even particularly glitzy. Whenever there is an event like the Oscars or the Emmys, I love browsing the pictures the day after to see who wore it best. I noticed a lot of all-yellow gowns which would totally scare me, mainly because if there is one colour that doesn't suit me, it's yellow. I picked my favourites to share with you (although I am a bit biased because as a true TV series junkie I favoured the Mad Mens, the Downton Abbeys and the Good Wifes among others).

Michelle Dockery's dress isn't really the best but I LOVE Downton Abbey - Sarah Hyland and her lovely embellished gown

Kate Mara looks so special - Jessica Pare and her cool 20s look - Julianna Margulies in an interesting embroidered gown (I LOVE The Good Wife)

Best for last: Zooey Deschanel and her heavenly frock - January Jones looks drop dead gorgeous in this statement gown

Sponsor Call

Who wants to be All Things Pretty sponsor in October, hands up! I swap ads for free, they all have the same size (180 x 120 px) and I am relatively open to whom I take on. Ads usually stay on the blog for an entire month and if I find the time (which I usually do), I will do a sponsor post at the end of the month where I introduce everyone very shortly.

If you are interested, please email me, attach your button, the link to your blog, and an info about which button size you need from me. I will get back to you with confirmation of the ad swap and my own button as soon as possible, but definitely before Oct 1. I will swap with anyone whose blog I consider interesting.

If you currently are an All Things Pretty sponsor and want to go on for another month, please let me know via email and attach a new button if you want to refresh it.

Ads are given away on a first come first serve basis and I will have no more than max. 11 sponsors at once. I look forward to hearing from you guys!! Big kiss, May.

The Classic Black Biker

Biker jackets can be life savers in the cooler seasons, when summer jackets are not warm enough any more and winter coats would bring you to the boil in under an hour. Most people seem to wear their biker jackets with skinny jeans or trousers and a longer top or sweater. However, some of the photos below will actually show you how versatile a biker jacket can be. I will definitely need to get myself one now that I work for a company basically specializing and excelling in the classic biker and because it is one of the must-have pieces this autumn.

Dreaming of Being a Prima Ballerina

Not long and I will sit in the Royal Opera and watch their current production of the classical ballet of Swan Lake together with my Mum and I am extremely looking forward to that. I get goosebumps and almost cry of joy every time I get to go to the ballet and I adore paintings by Edgar Degas as well as ballet photography.I  have danced ballet myself and when I was little it was my biggest dream to be a prima ballerina one day. However, we moved house, I changed ballet schools and didn't like it any more with the new teachers being more pushy and strict than at my previous school. Today I thought I should share some of that graciousness and glamour with you...

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

1// 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8
One of my all time favourite topics: SHOES. Lately, I have had to throw away quite a large amount of my old shoes because they were in bits, irreparably broken or simply totally worn out. Obviously, I don't throw anything out before I haven't checked the market for some good replacements. The 8 above represent my current favourites in footwear (excluding boots and wellies which are another topic) which I would totally cherish if they were part of my collection. Secret super favourite are the red suede court shoe at the left hand bottom and the leopard fur blucher in the middle *sigh*

Autum Days

Just catching up on Pinterest, creating an Autumn & Halloween board and these here are my favourite autumn pins. I love this upcoming season because it has such a beautiful colour palette, my birthday is in it, I can wear 100den tights again, it means getting new boots and a new coat this year for which I cannot wait to browse the shops, and I am a huge fan of big knit snoods and scarves that I can wrap around myself up to my nose so the chill will never get to me.

Dotted!

I thought I hadn't done a nail post in a while so I should delight you with a new design this week. I have kept my nail art within the autumn colour palette (purple, grey, white) and I think it's really cute and subtle enough for the workplace. How do you like it and what have you done with your nails lately?

The Art of Writing Letters

Sometimes a handwritten letter is way more effective and heartfelt than a telephone call. I am not very good at coming up with conversational topics whenever I call my grandparents. I know that particularly one of my nans loves getting letters from me and really appreciates them (keeps them forever), but when I call her it takes a mere 5 minutes before we hang up again. Wit my girlfriends it's more the sweet gesture that counts, everybody loves getting pretty letters. So for both occasions I make sure to always keep a few sets of appropriate, lovely stationery around and write letters regularly to keep everyone up to date. And with a bit of luck, I get some back... Do you still write private letters?

The Bookshelf

Joe and I were looking for the perfect bookshelf for ages. The problem is, unless you want to go IKEA, furniture really does get very expensive very quickly. However, once you stop renting and actually own a house, you don't want to stuff it with veneered IKEA pieces. So whenever something new is needed and you realize it'll cost something close to a grant, you feel it is a major commitment and want this investment to stick around for a while. We wanted our bookshelf to be 1) nice 2) modern but inoffensive 3) spaced differently. We settled on STRING. Just as IKEA it is a Swedish company but with very different standards and finishes. We're happy! Now we only need to get all of our book out of storage and come up with some lovely decorational pieces - maybe vintage finds to mix it up a bit.

I heart Plum, Merlot & Burgundy

Lately, I have stopped by a whole load of autumn red clothing simply because the autumn red colour palette is so warm and friendly that it will totally cheer you up and keep you cosy even on a really grey day. The above are my favourite pieces and I will certainly make sure to own at least a few of them before the days start getting darker and the temperatures cooler.

Lemon Tart

The other day while I was watching the Great British Bake Off, I marvelled over the participants lemon tarts and thought that I'd never actually made a tart myself. So I went out, bought myself and flan tin, baking beans and a lemon squeeze and made my first ever lemon tart. I used this recipe from BBC Good Food (half-fat version!!!) and although the edges of my tart aren't perfect, I have done pretty well AND the end product is utterly scrumptious - and at the end of the day, it's the taste that counts, right!?

Putting on my Winter Fur

Bershka Sweater with Back Bow
Starting my new job has confronted me with a challenge: staying warm on a budget. I freeze very easily and because my current job sort of puts me in the position of a receptionist (although that isn't my job title) I am stuck in a breezy lobby. Most of my winter clothing is still in Germany and I have to wait until my parents visit me for my birthday and bring the whole lot over. I have started drinking loads of hot red bush tea but I also shopped for a few knit jumpers that will keep me warm without straining my purse too much.

Freebie | Calendar

Recently I have started using fancy desktop calendars as my PC backgrounds. Whenever someone notices these cute calendars (at work and at home) they realise how useful it is and want to know where I got them from. There are sooo many freebie desktop calendars around currently, but Studio of Mae's design are so sweet and lovely - they truly are my favourite. Download September here or wait for October to come out in a few weeks' time.

Colour Inspiration Board

Because Joe and I are currently in the middle of decorating our home, I constantly stumble upon colour charts, colour inspiration boards and other things of the kinds. I found this one from paintersoflousieville.com the other day and like it so much that I thought I would share it with you.

Preparing for the iPhone

Pretty Backgrounds
I have had one and the same blackberry for the entire smartphone era now. At first I thought I would never want to change to the iPhone because my BB was my everything (although that sounds bad, I couldn't imagine going anywhere without it).
Over the years iPhone and Android phones have developed significantly while my BB seems to be the same as it was 4 years ago. Particularly the BB App World is a huge disappointment and the map feature is not half as good as the iPhone's. Now, with the new iPhone 5 coming out soon, I am really hoping to score some good deal on the iPhone 4 and for this very case, I am already preparing myself by searching for apps that I might like, pretty screensavers like the above one from eatdrinkchic.com and iPhone cases and bumpers. See my favourites below. I really really cannot wait to change from BB to iPhone very soon!!!

Hello There

I've seen this on quite a few blogs and I actually always really enjoyed reading it because the more 'befriended' I feel with one of my blogger friends, the more likely I am to read her blog regularly. Besides, I thought it would be a challenge for me to get to know myself a bit better as well. Maybe. (In retrospect I actually laughed at myself a bit.) Enjoy.

If you really knew me...

You'd know that I am super impatient. Mostly with myself but also with other people. I am trying hard to improve though.

You'd be aware of my strange love for crime series. And I don't mean NCIS, CIS and all of those other cheesy ones ending / starting on CIS. I cannot get enough of Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Swedish Wallander, German Tatort and other series of the kind. My parents used to call me Krimi Mimi when I was little.

You'd think I am an oddball for loving horror movies although I am deadly scared of them.

You'd know that I choose books by cover rather than reputation. I believe that if someone / the author has good enough taste to choose a stylish book cover, then the content cannot be that bad.

You'd find that I am a bit nuts because I constantly make up strange stories in my head. I'm probably just bored with reality.

You'd know that I only started eating vegetables 6 years ago (I am going onto 26). I still don't eat boiled carrots, sweetcorn and peas. Ewww gross!

You'd realise I am a super fussy eater in general and I have a very strong gag reflex with immediate choking after gross food.

You'd know that I used to be pretty crappy in English at school and discontinued taking English classes in the last 3 years before my A-Levels. Living in London has changed everything. Ever since, schooling and teachers have kind of lost the significance I used to give them.

Latest Discovery

Shops like Ruche, Anthropology and Cath Kidston have always been my favourites. They are the kind in which I can spend hours and hours browsing even if their floorspace is quite small. The other day on my way back from work, I discovered a new shop and it looked so sweet and lovely from the outside that I couldn't help but go in. Oliver Bonas have most of their stores in London, but there is one in Cambridge and another one in Bristol as well. Here is a tiny collection of what I liked most when I had a look around.
