Not long and it will be Mother's Day again (in the UK it was a little while ago but since my Mum is German, I am going with that calendar and I think the US also always have it in May). Although I never usually got an actual gift for my Mum, I have started sending her little presents ever since I moved to London. My usual budget is between £15-20 but if I find something I really like, I am willing to splurge as well. I hope I am able to inspire you for a little.

When we first moved into our house everything was white, leaving us with the opportunity to decorate every single room exactly how we wanted it. For our living room we chose turquoise, dark grey and bronze as the 3 main colours, for the bedroom we decided on a muted red and a mushroom tone (see here and here). While the kitchen, hallway and second bedroom are currently still plain white, the latter is scheduled to receive a make over soon. We've started looking at desks and armchairs (it's going to be our "office") but we haven't really talked about colours yet. I've been browsing Pinterest for inspiration and really loved the above 4: Dark Grey & Blush Pink; Deep Teal & Canary Yellow; Misty Blue & Beige with accents of Pink and Yellow; Blush Pink & Gold with accent of Black & White.

I haven't done potato printing since the age of 10 probably, however, I remember it being great fun at the time. The other day I discovered the water melon wrapping paper and thought how easy and cute that looks so I started browsing the web for some more ideas and think I might get stuck into some DIY next weekend. I collected all of my favourites on my DIY board on Pinterest (where you'll find links and sources as well).

In an attempt to motivate myself into doing some exercise (I am ashamed to say I haven't done anything in over a year), I bought a couple of shorts to wear this summer. There are so many pretty patterned, laced and brightly coloured pieces out there right now that it would be a shame not to get any. Personally I decided to buy the H&M ones from #4 and "splurge" on the Mink Pink scalloped ones from #2 but I also love the floral Zara shorts and the bright yellow Oasis ones (on my legs I reckon I could even pull off a yellow although it usually makes me look very ill).

The other day a friend of mine asked me to dig out the post about my Banana Bread as she couldn't find it on the blog. Somehow the internal search didn't come up with it for me either so I clicked through all of my recipes and eventually found it. Because it currently still isn't on the recipe summary page and seems to hide on the blog, I thought I'd re-share the link to the recipe because this banana bread is REALLY good, easy to make and makes your entire house smell deliciously during the baking process. You can find the post here and the actual recipe here.

When Birkenstock became "fashionable" again last summer, I would have never thought that this year a number of designers and highstreet brands would actually replicate the look and create their own versions of this traditional sandal. Thanks to my Mum and her faith in the brand, I have worn Birkenstock from the age of 1 and still love my black patent single strap ones which I usually wear around the house. Particularly after a long day and if I've been walking a lot, they really manage to relax my feet and make me feel comfortable again. Anyway, whilst some Birkenstock still look a bit too traditional (if you know what I mean) the 4 above pairs are quite contemporary and would work with a pretty sundress or skinny jeans.

Italy is one of my favourite countries to travel to and while I have already been there a few times (to Rome, Venice, Lake Garda and Verona amongst others) there are many areas that I only know from photos but which I also want to visit one day. The Amalfi Coast, Tuscany and Naples are only a few and not only will all these areas be kind of the same but also enormously different from each other, the people will too. When I saw photos of this wedding in Siena I couldn't help but share the link with you. It brightened up my "Monday" a bit after that nice long Easter weekend.

Traditionally there have always been colour combinations that were quite frankly frowned upon: black and blue, red and pink, black and brown to name a few. It seems that these "rules" have been thrown overboard in recent years. Black and blue together were very big during AW13 and seem to be coming back for AW14 as well. Red and pink have been out there for a while now but while browsing the internet for great dresses to take to NY and the Boston wedding, I found a few variations which I truly loved. While I actually bought the French Connection dress, the beautiful Bastyan dress is way out of my budget at the moment and I'm still ogling the one from Asos.
PS: I am not sure about black and brown yet. Tan maybe, but not so much brown.

Friday nights often are my mani-pedi nights as I often just come home after work while Joe is out so I get the house all to myself and can watch TV during my beauty sessions. Last Friday I thought it was time to ditch the dark shades and go with something a little more colourful since we've been having the most gorgeous Spring weather. I decided for a dark pink on my finger nails (Watermelon) and a light pink on my feet (Lovie Dovie). Very happy with the combination! Let's see what takes my fancy next time.

Last weekend we finally got started upgrading our balcony. For the last 2 years it was nothing but a grey metal grid with railings - boring and even scary for some (you could look down a dozen stories) - and we've not really been using the space at all. Joe first suggested to lay grass on the balcony about half a year ago and after some research he came across Easigrass™. After inspecting the samples at John Lewis, we decided to go with the Easi-Chelsea Super Soft as it was by far the softest and looked great (after all it "was awarded a GOLD MEDAL due to its realistic properties and amazing feel" at the Chelsea Flower Show). It took us about half the day to install everything but the results are great! Suddenly the balcony feels like an additional room, you can walk and lie down on it comfortably and when the sun shines it even warms up.

There are only few things which I find truly breathtaking (at least of what I know) but infinity pools like the above with their amazing views and scenery are definitely one of them. Unfortunately I have not yet had the pleasure of staying somewhere where there was one of these beauties but I rather hope that one day I will. Ideally it'll be on a vacation somewhere far away with turquoise water and green nature all around and I won't have to share it with anyone but Joe (at this point you could have heard me sighing...).

When you go on holiday somewhere and know that there'll be quite a lot of sightseeing on the itinerary, you should always plan to pack a bag which will hold all of the crap you're going to carry around (travel guide, camera, bottle of water, sunscreen etc), which will leave you hands free in case you need to get more involved but which will maintain a certain level of style with a variety of outfits. Luckily there are hundreds of pretty rucksacks around at the moment and SS14 has seen a huge revival of the duffle / bucket bag so there's plenty of those to choose from as well. If you are on a bit of a budget (because you are obviously saving up for your holiday spending allowance) the above 6 will offer excellent choices in a variety of great colourways.

In the winter I almost exclusively only wear black, grey and burgundy. During the summer, however, I always try and completely avoid those colours and shop for pink, white, shades of green and navy instead. Last weekend I got carried away pinning outfits with neutral summer colours (light grey, beige, white and kakhi) and found some great outfits which, despite their lightness, could also keep you warm on a slightly colder spring day. I love how the yellow skirt on the top left adds a pop of colour to the otherwise nude outfit or how the girl in the middle added metallic heels to her look. The nude Mansur Gavriel bucket bag looks awesome and probably goes with every single outfit, no matter what kind of occasion, colour combination or time of day.

Last month I totally surprised myself by buying a new watch. I had spotted the Zebratian by Swatch in Marie Claire magazine and instantly loved the b/w patterns. My first "cool" watch was a Swatch Watch, too, and although it took me a while digging through their archives, I even managed to find it here. I got the watch when I was about 10 and never stopped wearing it. Even after a strap change, it stayed on until the age of about 17. After that I got a couple of "grown-up" watches from Armani and Tissot. 10 years on and I am back to a fun Swatch Watch. I haven't been wearing it every day but I love it with a variety of very different outfits.

I haven't been able to bake anything in ages, mainly due to my lack of time and constant fatigue but I've still been browsing Pinterest and found some great ideas for things to make in the future. Particularly the Creme Brulée Cheesecake Bars sound and look delicious (I am a huge fan on Creme Brulée)!!

A little bit late but better than never, here are 4 suggestions for April Desktop Calendars. I went for the one from Geninne's Art Blog because of the great vibrant colours. They may seem a little bit busy but every time I return to my desktop, they cheer me up.

Sorry I haven't been around in ages, work has been so busy and instead of having the energy to blog in the evenings or on weekends, I have just been relaxing on the sofa and enjoyed TV time. Plus, I helped Joe set up a blog with a friend (check it out here) so that's kept me busy for a while as well. But now that the sun has come out, the temperatures are rising and work has finally calmed down a little, I thought I should start again.
As I mentioned, I will be travelling to NY this summer with Joe and a couple of friends and although I am all for nice, chic ballerinas and heels with my outfits, I have been looking for an alternative to wear during the day when we'll be walking around sightseeing most of the time. The above 4 pairs of TOMs are so pretty and in such lovely colours and patterns that I can easily see myself combining them with any of my outfits and because they are so comfortable, they are unlikely to give my blisters or foot aches. Now I just need to decide which ones are the best.
