Office Rugs

I am currently trying to convince Joe to paint at least one wall of our future office in the second bedroom in a very, very light blush pink and although he is not totally against it, I still have a lot of persuasion work ahead of me. In the meantime, I have been searching for rugs to decorate the floor with and found quite a few concepts that could work.

Summer Stripes

I love stripes. No matter how many striped dresses, jumpers, bags etc I have, I could constantly add more to my wardrobe. And while they go all year round, striped clothing and accessories are particularly great during the summer. They give me a feeling of being at the seaside, summer holidays, having picnics with great summer food and so much more. Joe sometimes comments that I am only missing a bunch of onions to be the perfect French man, but I don't care. I just love stripes.

Chocolate Raspberry "Cup" Cake

Remember when I posted the recipe for this 2-Minute-Chocolate Cake? Last weekend I had a bit of a craving for something sweet and had just about enough ingredients left to make this cake, plus an additional batch of raspberries which I added to the mixture before microwaving it. Next time I'll try mini marshmallows or maybe crushed nuts.

May Beauty Favourites

1) This eye roll-on literally saves me every morning but particularly after a night out. The cooling effect when using the product under my eyes is a gift in itself but, as promised on the packaging, I also find that it reduces puffiness and general morning soreness.
2) Wherever I go, this lip balm comes with me. I love the texture, it is not too greasy but keeps my lips moisturised for hours. On top of that, the packaging is cute, too. Note: this lip balm does not colour your lips visibly.
3) A couple of weeks ago, I totally splurged on a whole load of MAC make up products (which I am sure I'll do a post on soon). The one product which has really wowed me though is this concealer. I apply it on blemishes, the sides of my nose and under my eyes and not only does it cover thoroughly, it also stays put for hours. My shade is NW20.
4) For many of you this will sound all too familiar, I am plagued with nasty blemishes on my chin and along my jawline once a month. Using this spot remover doesn't provide me with an overnight cure but it helps reduce redness and shrinks the infection to a minimum within a couple of days.

Summer Essentials: Bikinis

The summer holidays are only a few weeks away and anyone who wants to stand a chance of wowing the beach with a pretty bikini needs to start searching now before all the right sizes are sold out. Above are my current favourites. This season I am well into prints and patterns, I love the sportier approach of #1 and #6, I have my fingers crossed that I can pull off the colour of #5 (but remain doubtful) and the geometric pattern of #3 is perfect if you want to stay in line with the current SS14 trend of all things geometric and neon on black.

How To: Style a Long Bob

Ever since I had my hair cut, I've only ever worn it open, either curled or straightened. Since my upcoming holiday in New York is going to have it's grand finale in a 4-day wedding bash, I am hoping for plenty of nice photos of Joe and me and to avoid looking the same on every single one, I have been searching for different ways to style my long bob. 

Something like Olivia Palermo's big waves will be great for one of the more casual, dancy evenings. The braided and twirled half-up-half-down dos are sweet ways to get the hair out of my face during the day events. The retro do has some added volume at the back and will be perfect for the wedding reception. The chic low chignon is on my list for the actual wedding as this sit-down event will be very formal and might get quite warm so having the hair off my neck will be great.

Pink Meringues

Ingredients: 6 egg whites, 1 pinch of salt, 350g caster sugar (or half caster half icing sugar), food colouring

1) Pre heat the oven to 140°C and line a couple of baking trays with grease proof paper. Beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff. It is easiest to do this with a stand mixer of electronic hand mixer. Once you can turn the bowl with the egg whites upside down without them coming out, they are ready (my Nan used to say "I you feel comfortable turning the bowl upside down over your head, they're ready).
2) Start adding the sugar, little by little, while using the whisk to mix it all together until you have a glossy, creamy mixture.
3) Pour food colouring down a piping bag (I used pink) and start filling it with the egg-sugar mixture. Pipe the meringues onto the grease proof baking paper, pop in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes. You want to take them out of the oven when they are just about crispy on the top but not dried out already. Leave them on the hot baking trays for another 10 minutes before sticking the second batch into the oven. The merinigues will continue to "bake" while they are out of the oven.

Crème Brulée

I've always wanted to own a cook's blowtorch, mainly to make crème brulée with a solid sugar crust on top. For years I've tried grilling the sugar in the oven but it never worked. The other day I finally bought one and of course this meant I had to make crème brulée instantly. I bought eggs and cream and using this recipe created the most beautiful tasting dessert ever. The ones you get in restaurants and supermarkets is usually very sweet and more like custard but this one is just perfect. It is creamy and subtly sweet with just the right amount of vanilla. It fit in perfectly with our main course of Coq au Vin.

Summer Essentials: Sunnies

The other item I constantly wear during the summer (see here for Summer Essentials: Flats) are sunglasses. Somehow I am unable to walk around when the sun's out without any sunnies on as my eyes will start streaming or I won't be able to stop blinking all day. Although I haven't spent more than £10 on a pair since 2008 because I just don't think that it's really worth it, I am currently coveting the Karen Walker Super Duper sunnies in #4. I probably won't get them as I found a perfectly similar pair in this Forever21 style, but I think I'll keep them on my wishlist for a little while anyway. The above 10 are my favourite SS14 sunglasses overall and most of them are real bargains.

Holiday Check List

Not long now and Joe and I will be off on holiday for 10 days, 7 of which will be spent in New York and another 3 in Boston for the wedding of friends of ours. A long holiday like this with many different occasions requires a wise packing strategy. I'll only have 1 suitcase and 1 carry on and have to pack everything from comfortable outfits to super smart ones. The only way I can do this successfully is via a check list. Currently Loving

Today I thought I'd share five things with you that I'm currently loving: 1) This chunky guacamole is so delicious, I have to make it at least every other week. 2) These strappy sandals from Zara are one of the only pairs that actually fit me and they are a bit of a bargain too. 3) A yummy batch of blueberry muffins to make a grey and rainy day a bit sweeter. 4) I probably won't end up buying a pair but I love the cool and edgy look of Karen Walker sunglasses. 5) Peonies are such beautiful flowers and currently in season so you'll find them in every flower shop.

Summer Essentials: Flats

In the summer I almost exclusively only wear flat sandals. Particularly when it gets quite warm, I cannot be bothered with heels (unless I absolutely have to) and resort to my quite substantial collection of flat, mostly open toed shoes. Above is my current list of favourites, all of which I generally consider quite casual but which can similarly work with smart outfits.

Bank Holiday Weekend

Last weekend was a long one and because Joe was away on a stag do, I had plenty of time to myself, met up with one of my girlfriends for a night out at Bar Soho and enjoyed the sunshine on our balcony. Ever since we put the grass down out there (see here), I've been outside whenever it was warm enough and really enjoyed this new space. Follow me on Instagram for more pics.

When I was looking for Mother's Day presents, I stumbled across this awesome jigsaw which is basically a copy of Google maps with your home being a little house shaped piece of the puzzle. I think this is a really cute idea as a moving in / new house present for someone and I think I already know the perfect recipient for this gift.

Chunky Guacamole

A friend of mine makes an amazing guacamole and after I'd had it a few times at her various parties, I asked her to share the recipe with me. I love how easy it is to make and how absolutely scrummy it is so I thought I'd share it with you, too. 

Ingredients: 3-4 ripe (!!!) avocados (feel them up in the supermarket and only take them if they are soft to the touch), 1 large tomato, 1/2 a red onion, 2-3 garlic cloves, juice of 1 lime, salt & pepper

Scoop the avocados out of their skins, mush them in a medium sized bowl with a potato masher. Roughly chop all other ingredients and add to the avocado. Season with salt and pepper and mix it all together with a spoon. Done! Serve with tacos, burgers, potato wedges, burritos and many more.

May Desktop Calendar

It's still a little bit early in the day so I was only able to find 3 desktop wallpapers for May this morning but if you check back later, I would have probably added some more. This month I am hoping for some sunshine and warm days (although today has started with a kind of non-stop rain), I am looking forward to departing for NY at the end of the month and a couple of bank holidays in between. Should be good.
